SciCan provides infection control for hurricane Katrina relief

When Hurricane Katrina’s storm surge caused a catastrophic failure of the levees that protected New Orleans, the response to the resulting 2005 disaster prompted one the largest domestic relief efforts in U.S. history.

A massive logistical undertaking, the response took many forms, from direct action aiding those on the ground, to collecting donations from individuals and organizations. In the days following the hurricane’s disastrous effects that flooded more than 80 percent of New Orleans, SciCan was called upon to provide additional sterilization capacity to the medical response mobilized to help area victims. Through the Dentistry Canada Fund, SciCan donated 110 chamber sterilizers to the relief effort.
