Fully-equipped mobile dental clinics follow PGA Tour to provide needy kids with dental care

For 20 years, the mobile dental clinics of Christina’s Smile have been following the PGA and Champions tour to offer free dental care to underprivileged children at selected tour stops. And SciCan Inc. has been riding along with it, providing STATIM sterilization technology and supplies as well as financial support.

Christina’s Smile was founded in 1989 by Austin, Texas, dentist Dr. Richard Garza who eventually closed his successful private practice to concentrate his efforts full-time to running this charitable organization that now has two tractor-trailer units donated by Roadway Express Inc. and outfitted into fully-functioning dental clinics with the help of SciCan Inc., A-dec, Patterson Dental and Air Techniques Inc.

Before each tour stop, arrangements are made to bring 120 children to the three-day clinic where treatments can range from routine cleanings and fluoride treatments to sealants, restorations, root canals, crowns, and extractions.

Children may also be referred to community organizations for follow-up care, and often the local volunteer dentists who staff the clinics invite children to their private practices to complete necessary dentistry at no charge.

Over the last 20 years of service, Dr. Garza and his staff, Diane Stigler and Nancy Nichols, have seen over 42,000 children and provided $19,000,000 in free dental care. SciCan looks forward to its continued support of Dr. Garza and Christina's Smile.
